About Us

My photo
We are the Pomario Family and we used to live in Johannesburg, South Africa. On the 10 July 2009 at 8.05 our little family grew to 3 when our precious daughter Natalia was born. We were blessed that she had chosen us to be her parents and we were privileged to have her in our lives. We believe she is here to teach us many lessons and give us plenty of joy. We relocated to Australia in April 2011. These are our stories……

Fevers and German Measles!

Hi All

Yes, as the heading says, little Natalia has Rubella, better known as German Measles..... It all started on Thursday afternoon.......

I raced home from work to pick Tali up to be at Moms & Babes at 14h30. Her cheeks were flushed, but this wasn't unusual as she sometimes has red cheeks after she wakes up, so no alarm bells were ringing. But we weren't even at M&B for half an hour when she started crying and moaning and just being generally unhappy. She normally loves the class and playing with the other kiddies. I put it down to one little boy pulling her hair. After about an hour of her clinging to me and being tearful did I feel her head and she felt rather warm. I decided to leave as she wasn't enjoying the class. Thank goodness, cause when I got home her temperature was 39deg., pretty high and only 1deg from being really really serious. 39deg is nothing to play with. I immediately gave her a suppository and a painkiller to break the fever, which worked, and then it was observing observing observing. Her temperature came down through the night but she was not a happy little person.

On Friday she continued to be unhappy, still having a temp of 37.3deg, and started losing her appetite, eating a little solids but not drinking any milk. I put it all down to teething!!, but could teething cause all this unhappiness?? I phoned my sister and we spoke for a long time - it must be teeth! We continued giving her Nurofen every 6 hours and Calpol every other time. Friday night saw us not sleeping, when Tali woke up every hour screaming with pain. Gees, she must be getting 4 teeth at once we thought, these damned little white enamels are causing havoc - poor little pumpkin!

Kim and I were zombies on Saturday. Tali had NO appetite on Saturday - all she ate was a teething biscuit and a little yoghurt. She was drooling buckets, her top soaked. She was not herself and my mind flashed back to January when I thought someone had abducted my happy girl and given me a different unhappy child.......... AND THEN, Saturday evening we undressed her for her bath and there it was........ the reddest, bumpy, pimply rough rash that we had seen yet. I got such a fright and Kim was on the Internet within seconds. What could it be? This could be what was causing all this havoc..... Still after reading tons, we weren't certain of anything. What we read was that it could wait till morning and was probably not life threatening. Luckily the rash was not on her face.. worst on her legs, arms and bum area and stretching onto her back and abdomen.

Again Saturday night came with minimal sleep so Kim and I were knackered today... This morning we went to see a GP who diagnosed German Measles, a viral infection, which comes along with a sore throat and mouth sores, hence all the drooling cause Natalia couldn't swallow. You cant do anything for German Measles, other than give painkillers and wait for the rash to 'burn' itself out. It's not a serious disease, but is only for pregnant woman! Everything that was happening fell into place. We do think she is teething at the same time....but now at least we know there is this other thing to deal with, and should be over within a couple of days!

At Moms & Babes and not feeling happy. Flushed cheeks and unbeknown to us a fever on the way!!

Photos Update

These photos were taken today at Moms & Babes. This is the first time Natalia sat in a little chair and she looks too cute! The picture above is one of my favourite....

These photos were taken yesterday. We gave Natalia Raspberries to see if she liked them. She didn't but loved playing and making a mess. Everything was stained RED

Playing in the garden.... Natalia loves the outdoors and the fresh air does her good! She's crawling all over the place now and she gets to burn all that energy in the big garden.

10 Months Old Today

Natalia is 10 Months (43 weeks) old today. How time has flown. Only 2 months to go and she’s going to turn the Big ONE. Natalia has 4 teeth now. She’s crawling all over the place and starting to do a bit of kneeling, the start of pulling herself up on things.

On the not so good front, she’s also started screaming and having mini tantrums when she doesn’t get her way, and she just loves the sound of her voice; a little high pitched, I hope this is just a phase! Another new thing is she has started nodding her head for NO and she doesn’t just eat what I give her anymore… she’s realized she’s an individual and is able to make choices. A little frustrating, so now I have to be more creative at mealtimes. I have made her 2 100ml day bottles milky Rooibos tea at 9am and 2pm, which she seems to like. And her night and morning bottle at 5am and 6.30pm are now 150mls as she is drinking less and less……

Natalia is also getting better. She still has a chesty wet cough and runny nose, but I think its coming to an end now.

To celebrate her 10 months old, here is a mini photo shoot that Loren did with Natalia about a week ago…… enjoy Grannies.

Crawling, Sickies and Baby

Baby
Shame, Miss Natalia has been sick since Sunday. It started with a dry cough on Friday, which progressed and progressed to a chesty wet cough on Sunday, and finally on Monday morning I took her to the Doctor. Because we spent last week with Loren and her 2 sick boys, she probably caught what they have, even though I tried my hardest for her not to get sick. So now Miss Muffet is a grumple and is not sleeping because she cant breathe through her tiny blocked nose. We are nebulizing her 3 times a day and giving her other meds. Luckily no anitbiotics at this stage, unless it gets worse, I'll take her back to the Doctor on Friday, or sooner.
Natalia has also become our champion crawler.......... She has been 'crawling' for the last 2 weeks but only since yesterday is she all over the place. Now we have to keep our eyes peeled. The little might is in everything, opening cupboards, playing with any wires and interesting looking things. Looks like this weekend will be devoted to 'baby-proofing' our house. I hope she passes out tonight, she's been a real busy bee today........
Something else that happened is my sister's dog, Baby, passed away last Thursday night. She was 14 years old and a real feisty, cheeky thing. Shame, she really had a good innings......... RIP....you will never be forgotten!

So we eventually get to the Drakensberg, since we missed out in February……..if you remember correctly, Natalia was in hospital!

We went on our annual family holiday to the Drakensberg this past week with Mom and Sister and her family. We left on Monday morning early for our 4 night getaway. (Last year we went to Clarens). But this year we had 2 extra little people on the trip with us, Natalia and Harlan. Shoo, having these extra people in the mix made things a lot more challenging and busy busy busy! To start, little Malakai was already ill and he just got worse, making Darryl and my Mom leave on Tuesday afternoon to see a Paed in Durban. Luckily he was not admitted to hospital and they returned the following afternoon. Then little Harlan also got progressively more sick and we all decided to leave on the Thursday night, 1 night early.

We stayed at Wits End Mountain Retreat in an 8 sleeper chalet with spectacular views all around. We relaxed as much as possible considering the above…….and did as much as we could with the kids. Natalia is fine so far and we gave her tablets to boost her immune system 3 times a day!

Shame my poor sister with 2 sick babies……….good luck Loren!
